Behind White Walls
If you’re looking to add a coat of white to your home’s interior walls, gather these tips and partner with painting professionals for your desired look.
Consider the undertones.
Colors, even white, have undertones. Before painting your space white, consider what it will be used for and what tone fits into its ambiance.
- Cool, white tones – Cool whites have undertones of gray and blue and emerge as stark and clean.
- Warm, white tones – Warm whites have undertones of yellow and red and appear warm and soft.
Between the two, which tone is better for your home? Are you painting a kitchen where you do a lot of tasks, or are you painting a living area where people come to kick back and relax?
It always comes down to your personal preference and style, but tone is a feature to consider when choosing between your whites.
Consider the upkeep.
White walls show it all — so be ready for that! They’ll expose every smudge, dent, and smear that happens. Because their imperfections will tend to surface loud and proud, you can always keep a little extra paint around to touch up small areas or ask your painting contractor for a stain-fighting primer or paint coat finish.
Bring all the accents together.
If you’re planning on painting a majority of your home white, ensure all the accents match or complement the space. Match your doors, the wood trim, and fixtures to the white — or contrast it. Just be mindful of all the different color variations that could crop up — features you may not always be able to change.
When you find your white, stick with it!
Finding your shade of white is like winning the lottery or finding a needle in a haystack — when you discover it, cherish it and hang on to it! You can rely and lean on this white for not only upkeep but for future painting projects.
Consider an accent wall.
If you like the idea of white but are still are not ready to commit fully to an all-white home, dip your small toe in and add an accent wall. Gray walls are trending, especially a dark charcoal gray accent wall mixed with neutral browns and creams — tie it all together with white walls and your home is an aesthetic masterpiece.
Create depth with layers.
When you choose white, it can easily become stark and institutional-like. Warm things up and add depth through layers. Forego boring and add in exciting and colorful textiles, pillows, rugs, furnishings, plants, and accents to brighten up and breathe life to your space.
Keep it light.
With different lighting, white walls can appear differently throughout, so ensure you test out your shade of white and observe it in natural daylight and in the evening when artificial light is used. If you have an area of low natural light, brighten a room cooler shades that will reflect warm, ambient light from various types of lighting layers such as lamps and task lighting.
White is easy to cover.
If you go ahead and try white paint throughout most of your home and decide it’s not for you, white is a color that is easy to paint over! Going from light to dark is ideal because going dark to light can take more sweat equity and additional coats of paint to completely cover it.
